Malachite is a green, copper-bearing mineral with a composition between copper carbonate and copper hydroxide. Its chemical formula is Cu₂(OH)₂(CO₃), making it a basic copper carbonate.

The name ultimately comes from Greek and is said to derive from the mineral’s resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant. Properties: Malachite is slightly harder than limestone. It turns black when heated and is dissolved by acids and ammonia.

The mineral is a secondary mineral formed through the weathering of other copper-bearing sulfide minerals and is often found as skarn formations alongside other copper ores.
