Gemstones or "semi-precious stones" are a simpler quality of gemstone and on a scale of 4 categories fall on the lower of them as they are not suitable for facet or cabochon cutting. This does not mean that they are less fine, but can often give the same feeling as the exclusive much more expensive gemstones.
